This shop was known as The Dairy. It was a retail outlet for Hundred Elms Farm in Sudbury. It was one of a several such outlets in the area. The farm came eventually into the ownership of United Dairies and so did the stores. United Dairies remained on this site until at least the 1960s.

There appears to be direct connection between the Royal Mail sorting office in College Road and the up railway platform. After the station was rebuilt, there was a service lift at the end of the passenger subway connecting the platforms. I have no memory of it being used.

The Territorial Army Centre would soon be built here during the expansion of the Territorial Army in the run-up to WW2. The TA centre has now come and gone. It was originally home to a Royal Artillery anti-aircraft unit, with similar units based at drill halls at Wealdstone and South Harrow. Latterly, it was home to a Royal Signals unit who moved on to Uxbridge when Harrow was closed and torn down.

Gayton Hall Hotel. This might have been a private residence at the time the photo was taken. This area was clearly a very attractive residential area consisting of commodious Edwardian villas of which the Gayton Hall Hotel building is now the sole survivor. The hotel is now called 'The Junction', which probably rather reflects how far the area has descended. In the manner typical of the 60s and 70s, the villas in Gayton Road, St John's Road and Lyon Road triangle were swept away and replaced with depressingly stark and ugly office blocks including one, for a time, occupied by the National Coal Board. What were the Harrow Council planning department thinking? The ugly planning continues. On the opposite side of Gayton Road is an area where the library and a car park were situated (probably once the site of attractive metro-land villas). These sites have become available and Harrow Borough Planning have allowed them to be used for a high-rise development, which is currently nearing completion. The skyline no longer exists. Corruption or incompetence? You decide.

Harrow Technical College and School of Art. The Technical College relocated to newly built premises in Watford Road in 1959. The School of Art remained until about 1970 when it, too, relocated to the Harrow Tech campus in Watford Road. The old building was torn down and has been replaced by a rather unremarkable block of retail units.

This is the Frederick Rothwell organ works on the corner of Bonnersfield Lane and Courtfield Avenue. The company made church organs and existed on this site from 1922 until 1960. The building remained for some time afterwards being used, I believe, as a council book storage facility. The site is now redeveloped as Rothwell Court.
