Mr.J.W.Burr, was Swansea Borough Engineer, he set in motion the largest engineering project in Wales, the construction of Tir John Power Station, 1931-1935, at a cost of £1.4M.

The Unemployed Relief Scheme, enabled Swansea Corporation to build the then largest power station in Britain.

Connected to the National Grid, Tir John produced the cheapest power of any station in Britain.

Throughout the 1950s, there were 400 people employed there.

Tir John was connected the the nearby Llandarcy Refinery, 1967, and converted to oil power.

The high oil prices of 1976, led to its closure.

The entire complex was demolished 1980.
