Prefabs. Temporary housing for families whose homes where destroyed during the Blitz WW2.

Site of parchute mine explosion during the Blitz. This demolished a row of houses opposite the windsor castle, the windsor castle pub, a row of shops next to the windsor castle, the top floor of the natwest bank and the roofs of two churches.

This is Fazakerley South Junction. The girder bridge can be seen that takes the railway over Walton Hall Avenue. This bridge replaced a narrower bridge in 1930 - The girder bridge was skewed into position during a weekend, road widening being excavated out as well. I do not think that Network Rail could have achieved that time frame. The new bridge enabled the widening of the avenue so to accommodate express tram tracks to run along the centre of the widened road, thus forming a dual carriageway.( look up 'Disused Stations website re Fazakerley South Junction where you can find a photo of the widening activity..

This house was built for William Pickles Hartley when the preserves manufacturing was transferred from Bootle to Aintree. The Pickles family moved to a large villa in Southport in the early twentieth century. This house was used as an office until the factory closed in the 1960s after a take over by Schweppes who moved production down south.

The Blessed Sacrament Church with temporary roof due to WW2 bomb damage.

The building behind the church was St John the Evangelist primary school. The bright looking building just beyond, is the school canteen. It was a new building at the time the photo was taken. The school closed in the eighties. The church is still functioning.

Warbreck railway station.The station was built in 1928 to serve the expanding residential area near to Walton Vale. It could only gain significant business from summer season excursions to Ainsdale, Birkdale and Southport. From 05/01/52 the line serving the former two locations, and Southport Lord Street closed. A lightly used all stations passenger service starting at Aintree Central, routed mainly to Manchester, continued until 1960 when it was ended - Special Grand National excursion trains to Aintree Central ran through the station until 1966

This was a goods only railway branch to the Langton Dock. It was formerly owned by the Midland Railway, one of the owning partners of the Cheshire Lines. The branch became part of the London Midland and Scottish Railway from 1923 - When the railways were nationalised in 1948, this branch, along with the Cheshire Lines, was absorbed into BR London Midland Region.

The Walton Vale Picture House. This cinema was demolished in the 1960s to make way for new shops.

This loco is hauling quite a lengthy goods train tender first. It is an LMS Fowler 4F 0-6-0 positioned in the photo as having just passed Fazakerley North Junction signalbox. It looks likely it will take the line curving to the right which is the northern spur of the Walton triangular junction, and may continue onwards to Walton-on-the Hill and the tunnels down to Huskisson Freight Terminal near Sandhills.
