This railway started in 1936 as the "World Scenic Railway". This line was an electric railway with tram-style overhead pickup which ran through the old railway tunnel. |

During 1938, R.D. Brimmell, the Borough Engineer, put forward plans for a network of tunnels incorporating the old railway tunnel, to provide deep level air raid shelters. These were opened on the 1st June 1939 and provided accommodation for up to 60,000 people. There were 22 entrances including the lower railway tunnel entrance and one in Arklow Square which may both be seen on the photo (although I don't know the precise position of the Arklow Square entrance). |
