There was a 'students' cafe in a basement below this building. It was popular with the more bohemian/art-college students. One student, David Hockney, painted a mural on the cafe wall. Under the dual carriageway at the edge of the City Park there is probably a rubble-filled cellar with a Hockney on the wall! |

Department store and headquarters of the Bradford Cooperative Society. There were others in Bradford: e.g. the Great Horton Industrial Society. This building in the modern style of the 1930s was extended and named Sunwin House in the 1960s.
The large rectangular shape on the roof with long shallow windows was the cafe where, even in the 1950s, waitresses in black uniforms with white aprons and caps attended the customers. The windows were clerestory lights. |
