The first week of The Solway Nature Explorers (9-14yr) Workshops is over. The group spent a week exploring the environment around the Solway Coast and learning new skills.
On the last day everyone was asked to write a postcard home to remind themselves of what they had learned during the week. The postcards were initially blank and everyone printed onto the front a stencil or a stamp cut during the mark making workshop. The postcards will arrive home in a months time and will be a small reminder of experiences and memories which may already have begun to fade. Much like the archive photographs we hope to spark these memories again with a small snapshot of their week. A few of these postcards have been scanned and pinned to this Aerial Films photograph in the places they relate to. Click on the pins to take a look. |

This workshop with The Solway Nature Explorers aims to teach lino cutting and stencilling skills, as a way of exploring mark making and mans mark on the landscape. Marks which are particularly striking in aerial photographs of the Solway coast, which capture the peat cutting that took place in the area on an industrial scale, carving deep channels into the earth, and still marks the landscape today. Photographs taken by The Solway Nature Explorers (9-14yrs) around the remains of the Solway Viaduct, at Bowness-on Solway have been turned into black and white images as inspiration for the lino cutting and stencilling part of the workshop based around mark making and mans mark on the landscape.
This is an interesting element that can be seen in the aerial photographs of the Solway coast, particularly the Peat cutting around Glasson Moss, that we are exploring as part of the Borders Project in this area. |

One of 18 images to be discussed at drop in workshops at the Kirkcudbright Parish Church Hall on Wednesday, 6th August, Thursday 7th August and Friday 8th August between 2.00-5.00pm.
Working with the Kirkcudbright History Society, the organisers of the Britain from Above - Borders project are hoping to hear reminiscences, memories and insights about aspects of the town which are so clear in the photographs and yet may be now changed or gone. The accounts inspired by the photographs will be noted and compiled into a booklet. The enlarged pictures show both the whole town from several hundred feet as well as more detailed views taken at lower level such as the adjacent photograph of the Harbour Square in 1947, when the fair was in town. There are also views of the Gibb Hill Air Sea Rescue base in 1947, and earlier views of the St. Mary Street / High Street area taken in the 1930s. |

We are working on the Borders Project on the Cumbrian side of the Solway Firth. Next week we will be starting youth workshops with The Solway Nature Explorers at Campfield Marsh, just next to the remains of the viaduct.
http://www.rspb.org.uk/community/placestovisit/campfieldmarsh/f/248239/t/112873.aspx You can still walk to the end of the old viaduct abutment but it's a bit of a struggle, the path is very overgrown and neglected. Once you reach the end there is a great view across the solway and one frame of the great iron structure that used to support to railway line is still standing. We will be using the shape of the remaining frame as a viewfinder to teach photography and composition skills to the Solway Nature Explorers. Their photographs will be turned into stencils and prints to produce land art made using natural pigments and materials from the local area. These will be recorded and turned into postcards to be sent back into the community. You can see the photography work of the Solway Nature Explorers (9-14yrs) in the pins on this aerial photograph! |
