The Science & Art Institute. The Mayor, William Kirkpatrick appealed for funds to erect a building to commemorate Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee and the Science & Art Institute was the result. It was opened on Monday 24th September 1888 by Sir Charles Forster Bart, M.P. and not by the principal of the project, William Kirkpatrick, as he died shortly before its opening. Vincent Kirkpatrick, William's son, took over the project and the running of the family business in Frederick Street which is still in business today (2014). The photo shows the front and back of the medal which was struck to commemorate the opening in 1888.

Walsall Picture House, later became The Gaumont and The Odeon. The Phantom Flame Flinger of old Walsall town was busy on this site! After opening in July 1920 it was destroyed by fire in September 1923. It was rebuilt and opened again in December 1924. It became known as The Gaumont from 1948 until October 1965 when it became The Odeon. On 2nd March 1971 the building was destroyed in an arson attack and stood derelict for several years before being demolished and the site redeveloped. The photo shows the cinema around 1926/27 (by dating the films showing).

The Beer Wurlitzer.

The original Picture House was itself burnt down on the 1st September 1923 - it was rebuilt and reopened on the 26th December 1924. The very first Wurlitzer organ to be imported in the UK from the US was inaugurated on the 26th January 1925, played by Jack Courtney. The organ was removed in 1955 and was later purchased by the Congregational Church in Beer, East Devon. In 2009, the 'Friends of Beer Wurlitzer' was formed and since then the organ has been returned to its former glory, complete with bells, percussion and other effects. In addition to use during services, the Friends hold monthly Saturday afternoon concerts, this year (2016) from March to November. I attended one last Saturday, 12th March, with organist Andrew Nix - excellent!
