The Georgian lodge building later occupied by the school replaced a magnificent, but short-lived 18th century mansion (Cannons), the seat of the Dukes of Chandos. The Chandos (Brydges) family were practically ruined financially as a result of losses incurred in the South Sea Bubble investment failure. As a result, the 2nd Duke was required to demolish Cannons and to dispose of the estate and contents. Cannons existed for a bare 23 years. |

By the time of this photograph, Edgware (LNER) had ceased to serve passenger traffic, having withdrawn passenger facilities at the outbreak of WW2. They were never resumed. Goods facilities were maintained until 1964. |
