SS Manistee under construction. The ship was built for the Irish fruit firm, Fyffes. It sailed between the Caribbean and the UK before WWII.
The ship was lost with all hands when it was sunk by torpedo off the coast of Ireland in February 1941. It had been part of convoy OB 288. |

This vessel is actually the Cunard liner Samaria, which was launched from Slip 6, the southernmost one in the yard, on 27th November 1920. The Manistee was built on Slip 5 and was launched on 28th October, but is hidden in this view behind the bulk of the liner. |

1920 was the year the Fullagar was built at Cammel Lairds. It was the worlds first fully welded vessel. It was 150ft long but I think the vessel in this picture looks bigger than that. There's a picture here. .. http://www.topfoto.co.uk/imageflows/preview/t=topfoto&f=EU003767 but that is dated Feb 1920 and it looks finished whereas the picture here clearly shows scaffolding. The other thing I find interesting is that this is 5 years before work started on the Queensway Tunnel. |
