One of the most famous views in the North-East of England, with the dominant landmark of the Norman cathedral of Durham on the peninsula created by deeply incised meander bend of the River Wear. The building stands upon an outcrop of Durham Low Main Post Sandstone (Pennine Middle Coal Measures) and was built of stone from the same geological unit. In this scene, the river is flowing in a northerly direction on the left of picture, away from the camera position. Most of the medieval city clustered to the north and east of the cathedral remains identifiable today. This image is an absolute must for the forthcoming publication! |
