Midland Railway / LMR Manchester Central Station. Grade 2*.
Built c.1880. Closed to passengers 1969.
Opened in 1986 as G-mex, the Greater Manchester Exhibition and Conference Centre, it is now called once more Manchester Central, used for exhibitions and conferences.
The "temporary" ticket office was never replaced when the station was open, but a significant part of the forecourt has now been used for a very large glass covered reception area. |

Fascinating to compare this with the an aerial view today. I realise they moved people out to the New Suburbs - but very little housing has been replaced here. It maybe arguable as to whether some of this housing was "Slum" housing. I'm not rewriting history, there was some appalling housing around, but folk that have been interviewed claimed they kept their houses spick and span and the "Slum" Label was just that. A bit of Politicians Spin to grab some useful land. |

Hi Ado16, There are some really interesting examples of this type of clearance, and the new build on the land, in Manchester. Try a search using the word Collyhurst. For comparison, take a look at some of the cover of Nottingham. Yours, Katy Britain from Above Cataloguing Team Leader |
