TSMV New prince Of Wales, 100 tons, 107ft loa. x 25ft beam x 2ft9ins draft, BoT Steam 6 Licensed to carry 375 passengers. Owned by A.E. Brand and W.H. Wilson trading as Southend Motor Navigation Co. Requisition on 28th May, 1940, by RN for Dunkirk service and lost to enemy action off the La Panne beaches because of her untrained RN "scratch crew", who -not realising she had petrol/paraffin engines, -0had topped-off her tanks with Diesel, thus contaminating her fuel and casuing engine stoppages. RN S.Lieut Skipper, and Ratings rescued by 54ft ML Triton [requisitioned private yacht].. |

TSMV Southend Britannia, 102 tons, 109ft loa. x 25ft beam x 3ft draft, built 1923-4 by J. Thornycroft, I.o.W. First year on the Foreshore -Summer, 1924. Petrol/paraffin engines. BoT Steam 4 Licensed to carry 345 passengers. Owned by Charles & Arthur Myall. Requisitioned on 28th May, 1940, by RN for Dunkirk service and survived the Operation undamaged. Continued War service as RN Harbour Auxiliary and Tender. Traded from Foreshore Postwar, until holiday Trade died towards end of 1960's from Airline Charter Holiday competition. Sold for further Service in West Country.. |

ML "San Toy II" of the Southend Motor Navigation Co, - commandeered by the Royal Navy on May 25th, 1940, for Operation Dynamo [the Dunkirk evacuation emergency] - and never returned. Declared a "war loss, circumstances unknown" by the Admiralty in September, 1940. Compensation was not paid to the Southend "Dunkirk little ship" owners who'd lost their only means of livelihood, their boats - until 1946, and then only at "1939 book values", - rather than the "replacement like-for-like" Charter document the Owners forced to SNO Sheerness to sign on 25-5-1940, when it became obvious he was not going to allow the SMNCo ex-RN staff to crew their own craft. |
