Known as Margate Jetty, this pier was the first designed by Eugenius Birch (1818-84), and the World's first seaside iron pier. It opened in 1855, closed to the public in 1976 and subsequently broke up during a storm in 1976. This iron pier replaced a timber one opened in 1824. Eugenius Birch designed 14 seaside piers around the coast of Britain, 5 of which are still in use.
